1-31 Application for Aug 6-7, 2016 :: Matthew 10:28

===

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 10:28

A very good question to ask is – what should I fear? Of whom should I be afraid?

A reasonable initial response is – the person or thing that could harm me physically or kill me.

But this is not eternal thinking. From the perspective of 100 years from now, this is not the right answer.

The right answer is – the person who controls what happens to my immortal soul.

In other words – God. Fear God. Fear him so much that you follow him and obey him.

And when he offers salvation, take it.

1-30 Application for July 31, 2021 :: Philippians 1:6

===

And I am sure of this that, he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:6

What is the Apostle Paul sure of? You are not done. You are not yet as good as your going to get. If you’re a child of God, you’re going to be perfect.

You will be complete.

Take comfort in that.

If you are thinking, “I’ll never be good enough,” take comfort in that.

Phil 1 6

===

In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:16-17

Three more parts of the Armor of God:
Shield — Faith
Helmet — Salvation
Sword (of the Spirit) — The Word of God

And how do these gifts relate to armor?
Faith — we can use it to shield us from, and extinguish Satan’s arrows, like temptation and doubts
Salvation — a helmet that can protect us
The Word of God — Our sword – it is for us a weapon that we can use to attack the works of Satan, to take away the hold he has on so many souls, and any that he has on ours.

Again, these are the tools and the gifts you receive as a child of God. Use them!

===

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

Ephesians 6:12-13

It is a serious enough thing to consider standing up to all of the human enemies of God. But when we consider that that is not our only task, our situation become more sobering. We are fighting demons. We are fighting Satan. They are stronger than us if we stand alone.

But we don’t stand alone.

We stand with God.

His armor, his whole armor helps us to stand firm against the Devil and his army in the evil day.

Pray for God’s strength to stand today.

Eph 6

===

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

Ephesians 6:10-11

What if Paul had written, “Finally, be strong by yourself”, or “be strong in yourself and in your own strength”? What if he had said, “Put on the armor you make yourself, and try to stand against the schemes of the devil.”

If he’d said that, we’d all be doomed. Doomed to condemnation.

But we can thank our Lord that he didn’t say that. We don’t fight Satan alone. We fight in the strength that the Lord gives us every day.

Praise God!

1-25 Application for June 26, 2021 :: 1 Peter 1:3-5

===

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

1 Peter 1:3-5

So much good in this passage, so much good for us.

We’re born again to a living hope
To an imperishable inheritance.
We’re guarded through faith by God’s power. All the way to Salvation.

And what does this call Paul to do? It cause him to bless our God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Bless God. Praise Him. Worship Him. Honor Him.

His salvation is forever.

1-24 Application for June 20, 2021 :: 1 Timothy 2:5

===

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus

1 Timothy 2:5

There is implied bad news in this verse: We can’t get to God on our own. We need a Connector. We need a Bridge. We need a Door.

But happily we have one. He is a man. He is our mediator. He is one with God. He is Christ Jesus.

He is our Way to God.

Seek Him. Accept Him. Worship Him.

1-18 Application for June 13, 2021 :: Psalm 86:5-7

===

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you. Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer; listen to my plea for grace. In the day of my trouble I call upon you, for you answer me.

Psalm 86:5-7

As I read this passage, it seems like this is a prayer from a person who knows that he has sinned and needs forgiveness. The suggestion is that if God wasn’t a forgiving god, we would have little hope that our prayers would be listened to and answered.

This is good news for sinful people who have days of trouble and who need grace and steadfast love.

Pray to this God. Trust this God. Call upon this God.

Isaiah 40

===

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.

Isaiah 40:28-29

The answer is yes. You have known and you have heard that the LORD is the everlasting God.

Here’s what else you’ve heard:
He created you and all things.
He never tires
He knows everything.
He can give you strength when you feel weak.

Ask him for strength.
