The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
Proverbs 18:10

On Wednesday nights during the school year, I work with kindergarten and first grade students and sometimes I find it helpful to teach a biblical passage with a narrative illustration.

This passage comes with one built into it. Choosing to be with God is like escaping an enemy by running into a tower that is strong and fortified. The danger is outside, but you’re being protected and made safe by the strong walls of the fortress.

God provides protection, security and safety. He is strong.

Trust him. Stay in his walls.

2-26 Application for July 1-2, 2017 :: 1 Peter 5:9-11

===

Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
1 Peter 5:9-10

Resist the Devil. Don’t give up. Reject his works and his ways. Fight the ways he harms you and others.

Know that you aren’t alone. Know that your struggle and your burden will not be yours forever.

See God’s grace in store for you: Restoration, Confirmation, Strengthening and Establishment. These things are forever.

And he will call you home.

1 Peter 5:9-11

===

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
1 Peter 5:6-8

With a powerful and dangerous enemy always looking to harm us, how should we behave?
Here are four things this passage tells us to do.

Cast your anxieties on God.
Be sober-minded.
Be watchful.
Be humble under God’s hand.

And here are two reasons why these thing are wise behaviours
God cares for you – he will take care of your anxieties.
God will exalt you – if you humble yourself.

Satan is strong. Aren’t you glad that your God is infinitely stronger?

1 Peter 5:6-8

===

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
2 Timothy 1:7

What are you afraid of? What do you fear? Are they things God has power over?

How would you describe your spirit – or said another way – what dominates your thought life? Is it inline with your God?

If you belong to Christ, your God is loving and powerful – that’s how your spirit should be.

But how can we get this spirit? Read scripture for confirmation. Pray for knowledge and belief in the truth.

Phil 4 11

===

…I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Philippians 4:11-13

As has been previously pointed out, when we consider the encouraging statement, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me,” we should consider the context.

This passage doesn’t mean that we can choose to do any action we feel like, merely by employing the strength that God supplies.

The range of “all things” in the passage is plenty and abundance to hunger and need and what God promises here is the strength to handle both of these extremes and (where you more likely are) all places in between.

Have you considered that? Do you worry about how you will handle it if you suddenly lose everything or gain everything?

If you are saved through Jesus, God will give you the strength to face it, no matter what he puts in your path.

Phil 4 11

===
When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. 23For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life

Proverbs 6:22-23

We know from the previous verses that “they” here are “Your Father’s Commandments” and “Your Mother’s Teaching”

These things are important for children. Their parents guidance will lead them, watch over them and talk with them.

Wise words from parents will be a light of guidance and a way of life.

Teach kids that it’s important to listen to and learn from their parents.

My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching. Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck.

Proverbs 6:20-21

It’s fairly clear in the Bible. A child’s parents are a source of wisdom for the child.

Children, listen to your parents.
Parents, think about what God wants you to say to your children.

Proverbs 6:20-21

===

And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

Galatians 5:24-25

The Apostle Paul makes a wise statement here. If we live by the Holy Spirit (according to his guidance, with his strength), we will keep in step with Him.

And one of the ways we can see that this is happening is we show the fruit of the Holy Spirit’s work in our live.

Look for it. In yourself and others.

Commend it. Be thankful for it. Praise God for it.

Our walk with God is much sweeter and stronger because of the Holy Spirit helping us.

Galatians 5:22-23

===

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

There are times when we’d really like to ask God, “What do you want me to do in this situation?”

or

“Where am I acting foolishly?”

Here’s a verse that can be helpful with both of those questions.

We are Christians. We are being sanctified. And the Holy Spirit is doing a work in us. He is making us more like Christ.

And here we have a list here of traits which are found more and more with those who walk with Christ. Praise God for that.

And the next time you’re asking, “What should I do now?” ask “What choice can I make right now that will show others this kind of fruit?”

And maybe your choices will become easier.

And you can thank the Spirit for that as well.

Galatians 5:22-23

===

Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Luke 12:32-34

What do you fear to lose? Do you fear the loss of things that someone could steal or destroy? Jesus wants to give you peace. He’s reminding you that he can give you wealth that will never be stolen or taken away from you.

So he says – consider giving the temporary things away to help people who have more need than you.

Your heavenly Father wants to give you the Kingdom. It will give him pleasure to do this.

Do you fear loss? We all do. Trust God. He has treasures in Heaven for you.
