5-45 Application for Nov 7-8, 2015 :: Psalm 118:5-8

===
Out of my distress I called on the LORD; the LORD answered me and set me free. The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The LORD is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.

Psalm 118:5-8
===

If we can apply this Psalm to all of us, I think are hard truths implied here: We are trapped. There are those who hate us. And there is no safety in human help. If we stand alone, there is great reason to fear.

But the LORD can free us. Those who hate us will not will if God is on our side. And there is One who can be our refuge: The LORD.

Song by Scott Jamison – Sung by the Jamison and Krause Kids

Ten years and ten months years ago, Debbie and I, trying to get to know our new church, went to a “Getting Acquainted With Bethlehem” Class and the pastor of the week was David Michael. He gave us a set of the Fighter Verse memorization cards (the way he chose who to give them to was by asking whose birthday was coming up the soonest). I’m afraid I didn’t do anything with them for several months.

Until, in the middle of October 2005, when our family had just begun meeting with a small group at Bethlehem. In one of the first meetings, Mike, our small group leader, encouraged us all to memorize the Fighter Verse before the next week. I decided to take up the challenge.

So one morning, ten years ago this week, I found the box of Fighter Verse Cards, took out the right card for that week, and on the way to work I made up a song for the verse.

It was this passage:

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

(Matthew 7:7-8 ESV)

And then I brought the song home and taught it to Debbie and the kids. And I learned that the process of teaching it to them helped me learn it.

And at our next small group meeting, we sang it for the group and they were pleased.

So we kept going.

Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples.

Psalm 77:13-14

===

This is worship. This is giving glory to God. God is great, he works wonders, his might is known by many.

We worship you, God. May this be true of more and more people, and peoples.

Song written by Scott Jamison – Sung as a round.

5-42 Application for Oct 24-25, 2015 :: 2 Corinthians 8:9

===

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

2 Corinthians 8:9

===

Grace is being given something you don’t deserve and you can’t imagine a more eternal or infinite example of this than one who is God becoming a human and dying for the sinful, finite creatures of Earth.

Becoming rich because he became poor. That’s the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

5-41 Application for Oct 17-18, 2015 :: James 1:19-20

===

…let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

James 1:19-20

===

Quick to hear
Slow to speak
Slow to anger

But … I have a right to be angry, right? If something doesn’t go my way, I should speak up about it and let people know I’m upset … right?

This might be common sense from the world’s perspective, but it’s not from God’s.

If we want God’s righteousness working in us, we should stop and listen. Find out what’s really going on. Pause and not assume that we know everything.

If you are a Child of God, you should do it His way.

Song written and performed by Becki Warnock

5-40 Application for Oct 10-11, 2015 :: Proverbs 4:25-27

===

Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.

Proverbs 4:25-27

===

What is your trajectory? Where are you headed? What are your choices leading you to? Are they leading towards God or towards evil?

God is straight before you. Do not turn to the right or to the left.

5-39 Application for Oct 3-4, 2015 :: Proverbs 4:23-24

===

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.

Proverbs 4:23-24

===

Your heart is very important. Don’t doubt that. God says that from your heart flows the springs of life. That means God thinks your heart is very important, so you should, too.

One might think that the best way to vigilantly keep your heart is by protecting it from evil outside forces, and this is somewhat true, but, perhaps surprisingly, it’s not the first thing the wise author mentions. What he places of first importance is guarding what comes out of your mouth. Apparently what you say can corrupt you as well as what you hear or see.

So be cautious with what you say, and don’t treat it lightly.

5-38 Application for Sept 26-27, 2015 :: Psalm 73:25-26

===

Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Psalm 73:25-26

===

So many things on earth will fail us. We need Someone who is not mortal. Someone who is not earthly – someone who is eternal. We need God.

Our hearts may fail us, but God will strengthen our heart.
Our flesh may fail us, but God is all we need.

Desire God.

5-37 Application for Sept 19-20, 2015 :: Jeremiah 32:40

===

I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me.

Jeremiah 32:40

===

Fear is a good thing if it causes you to act wisely. God is promising to cause us to fear him, so we won’t turn away from him.

But he is also, almost in the same breath, promising to never stop doing good to us. That’s a bargain a wise person will take. Everlastingly.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
John 10:10

Death, destruction and loss or abundant life.

Do you trust Jesus to give you abundant life? He can give it to you.

Choose Jesus.
