Application for March 1-2, 2014 :: Acts 5:29

Acts 5:29

“We must obey God rather than men.”

===

A very short verse. Very simple. Very foundational. If you obey someone else while disobeying God, you are idolizing the other person.

If we put other people before God, then they are our new gods. Have no god before God.

You worship God by obeying Him.

Application for Feb 22-23, 2014 :: John 10:27-30

John 10:27-30

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

===

It has been said that if Jesus wanted us to remember something, he stated it more than once.

When we’re in a safe place, the first thing we wonder and fear about is, will I always have this refuge? Or is my security temporary?

Jesus wants it to be clear: No one can take you out of the hand of God. “No one will snatch them out of my hand”
“No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.”

No one.

This is good news. This is news I want to hear. This news makes me want to follow Jesus. And the good news is that when I follow Jesus, I am following his Father.

Into eternal life.

Application for Feb 15-16, 2014 :: Proverbs 3:11-12

Proverbs 3:11-12

My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.

===

There is an implied truth that corresponds with the overt truth spelled out in this passage.

The stated truth is that we should consider it good when we are corrected by God, because it shows that he loves us, just like a father.

But the implied truth is this – A father who loves his children will discipline them.

Those of us who are parents should remember both of these truths.

Application for Feb 8-9, 2014 :: Proverbs 3:9-10

Proverbs 3:9-10
Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.

===

Here’s another passage with good news. Do the right thing and you will receive joy.

Of course it is right and just that the LORD be honored. We should do it anyway. God could expect that we honor him with our wealth and justly give us no reward in return. But our God is a gracious God who does reward, who wants us to have joy, who wants to give us plenty.

I thank God that he is like that.

Application for Feb 1-2, 2014 :: 1 Thessalonians 5:18-22

1 Thessalonians 5:18-22

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.

===

This is the second half of Paul’s guidance to the Thessalonians for how to live in community.

As I was talking to my kids about this verse, I pointed out that these verses come very nearly at the end of the letter. I like how this suggests Paul’s theology. It’s not “Do all these good things and God will make the blessings true”. Rather, it’s “Because of all the good and true things that God has done for you, now go and act in this way in your church.”

And how will we live if we are believing the hopeful truths?

We’ll always give thanks to God – no matter what is happening.

We will try to be aware of when the Holy Spirit is working and not hinder Him.

We will test what is being said to make sure that it is from God.

We will see evil and avoid it.

We will do these things if we trust God and want to obey Him.

1 Thessalonians 5:14-17

And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing

===

Here we have a set of prescriptions for how to live in community. There are so many helpful thoughts here.

1. Encourage each other to not be lazy.

2. Find ways to strengthen those who are having difficulty coping

3. Don’t be quick to give up on people.

4. Revenge doesn’t belong in a church – or in the heart of a Christian.

5. Act in service of those in your community, and outside of it.

6. Find ways of thinking about things so that you get joy.

7. Never stop talking to God.

These are all things that all of us can do more of. What steps towards obedience to these prescriptions can you make this week?

Application for January 18-19, 2014 :: John 14:6

John 14:6

I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

===

In Christ, you are not lost, because he is the way

In Christ, you have someone who you can trust to lead you because he is the truth.

In Christ, you have someone who can save you, because he is the life.

And he’s not just a way, or a truth or a life. He’s the only way to the Father.

Aren’t you glad we have the Word of God to help us see this?

Application for January 11-12, 2014 :: Isaiah 43:1-3

Isaiah 43:1-3

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

===

I was at first going to say that this is a Bible passage with only good news and no bad news, but I looked again. There is what you might call dark implications in here.

You will have reason to fear. You will pass through deep waters. You will walk through fires. There will be flames.

But you have a Saviour. He will be with you. You are redeemed.

And you are His. The Holy one of Israel. The LORD your God.

You are His, you are His, you are His.

Let this truth hit you this week.

Application for January 4-5, 2014 :: Isaiah 41:10

Isaiah 41:10

Fear not, for I am with you. Be not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

===

The God of the universe says he will uphold you. If we really trusted that we wouldn’t need the first part of the verse – Fear not, do not be dismayed.

He will help, strengthen and uphold you. Live in that knowledge and experience peace.

Application for December 28-29, 2013 :: Matthew 22: 37-39

Matthew 22: 37-39

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

===

An Adult Sunday School Teacher at our church likes to say that all of the laws in the old testament have this as their primary goal: Love.

This verse points us in that direction. And it gives clarity to who we should love: First and most, God. And then others.

Can you imagine what our churches, homes and cities would be like if all Christians lived this way?
