The last time I read through the New Testament, I decided it might be fruitful and interesting to keep track of all of the occurrences where the author made reference to narratives in the Old Testament. And since this week’s fighter passage makes reference to the Great Cloud of Witnesses, I thought it would be an appropriate time to post the list. You’ll find them below.
But before that –
One disclaimer: This list doesn’t include bible verse references nor does to include those instances when an author simply names an OT character. So for example, this list doesn’t include Luke 10:12, but it does include Luke 17:29. It also doesn’t include most passages where Moses commanded or spoke something.
And A Few Notes:
-88 Story References
-From 16 Books of the New Testament
-Primary Places: Acts 7 and Hebrews 11
-31 Main Characters
-Character with Most References: Moses (21) — About a third of the stories are references to the Exodus.
On Wednesday nights I work with Kindergarteners and we teach them that God is the most important person in the Bible. This list bears this out. Click on the links – more often than not you will see references to God working through the people, or how the story tells us something about God, or how God is speaking to us through the story.
This list also gives evidence to the idea that Jesus liked/knew/understood the Old Testament.
Here’s the List – Please let me know if I missed any.

Hebrews 12:1
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us
===
“So great a cloud of witnesses” Isn’t that encouraging? You are not alone. You aren’t the first to try this. They have already run the race set before them.
And what is that race? The race to glorify God. And our energy, our power source is our faith in the God that so many others have had faith in. I can only assume that the writer of Hebrews put in this list of witnesses in order to increase our faith.
So then what? Well, look down. Are you trying to run this weight while holding ten pound weights? Aren’t they slowing you down? Why are you carrying them.
Lay them aside.
Trust God. Follow in the righteous footsteps.

Psalm 37: 5-6
The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand.
===
The implication here is probably not what you want to hear: A man delighting in the LORD might fall. You, when you are trusting in God, might fall.
But you won’t be cast headlong. You’ll bounce back up. Because God will lift you up. You serve a God that will not let you fall to ruin or fall permanently.
Delight in his way.

Psalm 37: 5-6
Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.
===
How certain is the psalmist that God will make justice happen? Just as certain as he is that morning and noon will come tomorrow.
We should be just a certain. That means we should not feel like we need to pay people back or make sure we get what’s due us.
I should commit myself as if I believe this. So should you.

Psalm 37: 3-4
Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
===
Do you want the desires of your heart? It’s a ridiculous question. Obviously you do. And here we have a road map for how to get them.
By delighting in the LORD. By Trusting in the LORD. By being faithful. It’s simple. It’s also impossible. No one can do it, and now one will do it, apart from God, apart from being saved.
So seek God and ask for his salvation.
If you have it – keep seeking and asking.

1 Corinthians 1:18
For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
===
For us who are being saved – the Word of the Cross tells us that we are sinful and need saving.
For us who are being saved – the Word of the Cross tells us there is a sinless human who took our place.
For us who are being saved – the Word of the Cross tells us there is no way to get to God on our own.
For us who are being saved – the Word of the Cross tells us there is still a way to God.
All of this is the power of God.
But for those people who think they can get to God without help, or that there is no need to get to God, to them the Word of the Cross is foolishness.
Pray for those people that God will shine through the darkness.

Philippians 3:10,11
that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
===
“By any means possible….” Paul will do what it takes. Even if it leads him into a very difficult life. Even if it means prison, physical pain and loss of reputation.
He has made these choices because in fifty or a hundred years all pleasures and pains he experiences now will mean nothing, compared to the resurrection from the dead.
Paul has his priorities straight.
