Application for Jan 26-27, 2013 :: Phil 3:9

===

Philippians 3:9
and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith

===

… Not my own righteousness, not my own works, not obedience of the law, not my own good acts…

But

God’s righteousness, because of our faith in Christ.

That is how we will be found in him.

It’s good news.

Application for Jan 19-20, 2013 :: Phil 3:7-8

===

Philippians 3:7-8
But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ

===

Once again, Context helps with this passage. The Apostle Paul has just given us a list of reasons why he was an excellent Jew.

Perhaps you could list several reasons why you were a decent person before you came to know the Gospel and understand your great need for a savior.

Maybe you never swore.
Maybe everyone thought you were a really nice person.
Maybe you always went to church.
Maybe there are a list of temptations that never tempted you.

But then you began to understand that these things didn’t matter much compared to the sin that you had done.

So now you see that that list of good things about you is worth nothing when it comes to saving you.

You saw that the only way to God was if you gained Christ – if you were found in Christ.

There is surpassing worth there.

Application for Jan 12-13, 2012 :: 2 Chronicles 16:9

===

2 Chronicles 16:9
For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him…

===

Tom, one of the song writers and producers of Fighter Verse Songs, has pointed out to me that this Verse leaves out some important context.

At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him, “Because you relied on the king of Syria, and did not rely on the LORD your God, the army of the king of Syria has escaped you. Were not the Ethiopians and the Libyans a huge army with very many chariots and horsemen? Yet because you relied on the LORD, he gave them into your hand. For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.” Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him in the stocks in prison, for he was in a rage with him because of this. And Asa inflicted cruelties upon some of the people at the same time. (2 Chronicles 16:7-10 ESV)

Do you see? King Asa started well, and trusted in God – and God gave him ‘strong support’. But he stopped doing that and relied on more earthly things. And God removed his support.

Do you want the support of God, who can stop raging armies? Is your heart blameless?

Seek God. Seek God’s will. Pray for the strength to do God’s will.

Application for Jan 5, 2012 :: Joshua 1:9

===

Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

===

Welcome to the beginning of New Fighter Verse Set 3.

And just like last week was a good final verse, this is a good beginning.

It seems to me that one very important word here is the small word ‘your’. He is your God. Yahweh, the creator of the world who is in all things, is YOUR GOD.

This is a good thing to keep in mind when you don’t feel strong or courageous, when you feel frightened or dismayed.

This God, your God has commanded you to trust in him and his presence wherever you go.

It’s a blessing.

Application for Dec 29-30, 2012 :: Revelation 5:12-13

===

Revelation 5:12-13
…”Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

===

It’s a pretty good way to end the year, don’t you think?

Worthy! Power! Wealth! Wisdom! and on and on.

It’s all praise. To glorify God and enjoy him forever. That’s why we’re here.

And that’s what we’ll do. Forever and ever.

Application for Dec 22-23, 2012 :: 1 Corinthians 2:1-2

===

1 Corinthians 2:1-2
And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

===

Quick quiz:

True or False: You have to be a genius to effectively tell people about Jesus.
True or False: You have to have several credits of speech class under your belt to speak words that will serve to draw people closer to the Son of God.
True or False: You have to understand the full and correct theology presented in the Bible in order to evangelize.

Answers: False, False and False.

All you have to know is Jesus and him crucified. Isn’t that good news?

Application for Dec 15-16, 2012 :: 1 Timothy 4:12

===

1 Timothy 4:12

Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

===

Can a young person be exemplary? Should a young person strive to live in such a way as to inspire older people to better behavior? Can a person learn from someone who is younger than them?

This verse says ‘yes’ to all of those questions.

And it’s quite a list: Speech, conduct, love, faith and purity. Set an example. Old and young people, set an example.

Application for Dec 8-9, 2012 :: John 3:36

===

John 3:36

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

===

Often the Fighter Verse passages start with the bad news and end with the good news. This one does the opposite.

One one side – Eternal life. On the other – no sight of life and wrath of God. And what makes the different.

Belief and Obedience. And in whom and of whom? The Son. It’s pretty clear.

Do you believe? And are you acting like it?

Application for Dec 1-2, 2012 :: Romans 14:7,8

===

 Romans 14:7,8

For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.

===

Phil, one of our songwriters, and the writer of this song, commented that this and other recent fighter verse passages mention death quite a bit. He pointed out that this song has ‘die’ or ‘dies’ four times.

Usually, talk of death is discouraging, scary, morbid. But not this verse. It’s uplifting. We know we’re going to die some day. This says that death won’t matter. We will still be the Lord’s. We will go to Him. We will see Him. We will be His.

So, are you living as ‘to the Lord’?

Application for Nov 24-25, 2012 :: Hebrews 11:6

===

Hebrews 11:6

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

===

In his book, Practicing Affirmation, Pastor Sam Crabtree wrote,

Rewards are a big deal in God’s economy. You can’t even come to God unless you believe that he rewards.

Honestly, I’m not sure I would believe such a strong statement. But then he quotes this week’s fighter verse. There it is in black and white: Whoever would draw near to God must believe that he rewards those who seek him.

This is comforting. We are not sinful or selfish to want reward from God. Rather, we are told we must believe that he rewards.
