Application for Sept 1-2, 2012 — 1 Peter 4:16

===

1 Peter 4:15

Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.

===

My thought is that Peter is aiming this verse at people who, because of following Christ or doing God’s will, have found some kind of persecution, and now they are afraid that people will think poorly of them, or scoff at them, or take pity on them for being foolish.

And Peter says, No, don’t feel ashamed. You aren’t following Jesus so that people will think good about you, but because you think Jesus is worthy of being followed.

Have you ever felt embarrassed when something bad happens to you after you have chosen to do God’s will? Are you feeling embarrassed about something like this now?

Take comfort. Glorify God. His opinion of you is the only one that matters.

Application for Aug 25,26 2012 — Psalm 91:14-16

===

Psalm 91:14-16

Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.

===

This is the end of Psalm 91. Some of the sections of this Psalm have been a little sobering, but not this one. This is all encouragement, all grace and mercy, all kindness.

Three human choices that this passage says God rewards:
Holding Fast to God in Love
Knowing God’s Name
Calling to God

Five Ways God Rewards:
He delivers
He protects
He answers her call
He will be with him in trouble
He will rescue her and honor her
He will satisfy him with long life and show him my salvation.

How will you choose to respond?

Application for Aug 18,19 2012 — Psalm 91:11-13

===

Psalm 91:11-13

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.

===

My ESV Study Bible says this about Psalm 91: “This tender and intimate Psalm describes the confidence that the believer may have through all manner of dangers and challenges”. This is a good summary, I think.

This week’s verse happens to be the verse used by Satan to tempt Jesus. And while Jesus points out that Satan is using this verse foolishly, he doesn’t deny that this verse applies to him, which it most certainly does.

Isn’t that an inspiring thought? The same passage that talks about the safety of our Lord Jesus, can be applied to any child of God – any saved person? If you are saved – God will preserve you and bring you to him.

1 Peter 5:6-10

===

1 Peter 5:6-10

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful.

Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

==

There is bad news:
The Devil is seeking to devour you.
Christians will suffer.

But here are the promises:
At the proper time, God will exalt you.
God cares for you.
You are called to eternal glory in Christ.
God will restore you.
God will confirm you.
God will strengthen you.
God will establish you.

And only in a little while. Trust God. Wait for your salvation. Stand strong.

Fighter Verse Application for Aug 11 and 12, 2012

===

Psalm 91:9-10

Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge—no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent.

==

It would be nice if it were true that being a Christian or making the LORD your dwelling place made it certain that you would never get sick. Wouldn’t that make life easier for us?

But we know that isn’t true, because we all know good Christians who have been sick — even to the point of death.

So what does it mean that “no plague will come near your tent”?

It means no sickness that will harm us spiritually, no evil that will make us lose our standing with the eternal God, no permanent ailment will every be allowed to bring us down.

And that’s so much more comforting than a promise that we’ll never get a cold or experience leukemia.

Fighter Verse Application for Aug 4 and 5, 2012

===

Psalm 91:7-8

A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked.

==

God will protect you if you are saved. If you are a Child of God, no real harm will come to you. Those who are in Christ will not see death.

Have you noticed that this is a repetitive Psalm? And when God repeats himself (through the inspired word of the psalmist) don’t you think it wise to consider the message that is being repeated?

Fighter Verse Application for July 28 and 29, 2012

===

Psalm 91:5-6

You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

==

The psalmist wants you to understand – he repeats it, so it must be important: Night AND Day, when it is dark and at noon, you need not fear.

He goes further, you WILL NOT fear.

Remember this is the person who makes God his fortress and the man who trusts the LORD.

Do you to need to more fully commit yourself to God? Do you need to trust him more?

Wouldn’t it be nice to not be afraid?

Application for Fighter Verse Song For July 21 and 28

===

Psalm 91:3-4

For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.

==

You have an enemy and he’s setting traps for you. This verse implies that there will be times that you will be caught in those traps. But God has made a way for you to escape them. That is the Gospel.

And then you will find safety in God, your loving Father. Do you believe this? Do you act like you believe it?

Fighter Verse Song For July 14 and 15

===
Psalm 91:1-2

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

==

Are you ready? For the next month and a half we’re going to be memorizing Psalm 91. It’s powerful and personal.

The Psalmist makes a general statement about the good that will happen to those who trust in our God and then makes it his individual declaration: “I will trust in this God”

Is this your declaration? Do you trust him. When you are in a tricky situation, do you act like you believe these words?

Because the good news is this: You can trust these words – and you can trust Yahweh.

Fighter Verse Application for July 7 and 8, 2012

===

Proverbs 18:10

The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.

==

Are you experiencing difficulty? Are you running away from evil? Do you have darkness attacking you?

There is a safe place.

This is good news.

There is a safe place. Don’t think you are alone. Don’t stand in your own vulnerability. Run to him.

By the grace of God, choose righteousness.
