For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23

Here is the gospel, as clear as can be. And like all gospel verse, it’s bad news/ good news.
We have earned death. That’s what we deserve. We should consider what it would mean for us if that were the end of the story.
Thank God for the next word, however: But …
But the free gift – that’s almost redundant, isn’t it. It’s as if Paul wanted to make a point. There is a gift – and it’s free. And what is it – what is this gift? It better be better than a toaster if it’s going to counter the very bad news at the beginning of the sentence.
It is. “Eternal Life”: a way of escape from death.
And what (or Who) is the means for this escape? Christ Jesus our Lord.
So it’s very bad news, the worst news we could imagine countered by the grace and mercy of the best news any being could receive.
Have you accepted this free gift?
