As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.

Psalm 103:15-16

This is sobering, isn’t it?

Our time on earth is very short. We shouldn’t think so highly of ourselves to think we are like God.

As mortals, we are more like grass than like God. And we’ll be forgotten soon.

But there is good news for the believer – for those in Christ.

We just heard it: God crowns us with steadfast love and mercy. Our diseased will be healed.

God’s steadfast love is forever. His healing is forever. His gospel is forever.

And the gospel isn’t for grass. It’s for us!

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.

Psalm 103:11-14

As far as the heavens are above the earth.
As far as the east is from the west.

That’s pretty far. It’s another way of saying “All the way”
That’s how much he loves us.
That’s how much he takes away our sin.

And how does much compassion does he have for us mere humans?
Compassion like a father.

This God, the one created the universe and is eternal and holy, He is not impersonal. He is not distant.

Worship this God.

The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.

Psalm 103:8-10

Here is mercy and grace.

We deserve his wrath – he is slow to anger and then not angry forever.
We are sinful and he does not treat us sinful
We have many iniquities and he doesn’t repay us.
We deserve bad and he gives us good.
He is abounding in steadfast love.

Jesus made a way. The Gospel made a way.

This is an infinitely important reason to bless the LORD.

…who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The LORD works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed. He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel.

Psalm 103:5-7

More reasons to bless the LORD:
He gives you satisfaction – so much so that you feel young and strong as an eagle.
He makes sure that righteousness and justice happen for oppressed people.
And he lets us know who he is and how we can be with him.

Thank the LORD. Worship the LORD. Bless the LORD!

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy

Psalm 103:1-4

We begin with a plea from a person to his own soul to bless the LORD. This will be repeated throughout the Psalm.

He gives many reasons to bless God:
Two of them remove the curse –
He forgives sins
He heals all diseases

And two of them are eternal blessings
He redeems you from the pit of the curse
He crowns you with his steadfast love and mercy.

Here is a God who is worthy of blessing.

Will you join with the Psalmist by encouraging your own heart to bless the LORD?

We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.

Romans 15:1-2

Compared to other humans, you are strong in some ways. There are people who are weak compared to you with respect to certain attributes.

How do you act towards them?

Do you try to please yourself, or that weak person?

And with respect to those attributes where you are weak in comparison, how do you want the stronger people to act?

You want them to build you up and support you and give you encouragement and guidance.

Go therefore and do likewise.

Psalm 16:11

God is not a joy-killer. God is not a pain delighter. God is not a stodgy rule-maker.

He puts on the road to life.
He wants to have joy. Not a little joy but full joy.
He doesn’t want us to have fleeting good feelings. He wants us to have pleasures forevermore.

Take it. Take his gift. Go into his presence. Go to his right hand.

He has made a way through His Son.

For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Romans 10:13-15

This passage has the Gospel order backwards on purpose – as if to say “how can we get to our goal?”

Let’s look at it forward:
There must be senders to send preachers
Preachers must be sent to make sure the people hear.
The people must hear so they can believe.
They must believe so they will call on him.
They must call on him they will be saved.

And we want people to be saved. So we must send preachers.

And you – will you call on the name of the Lord?

Nothing is permanent. Nothing lasts forever. Even beautiful things that God has created, like flowers.

But God’s word, and all the truth about Him, and all the promises for us. They last forever.

One million years from now, God’s word will stand.

Psalm 23:5-6

Forever is an important word. Good things that we experience for a short time are not like the gifts you can enjoy your whole life. But even more precious are the blessings that God has in store for us throughout eternity.

And what is our eternal gift? To live in the house of the LORD. Forever.

If you are in Christ, if the LORD is your shepherd, your cup overflows and you have a table prepared for you.

Praise God. Thank him. All the days of your life.
