1 John 1:8-9
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
So here – as is often found in scriptures side by side – is good news and bad news. Or more accurately: really, really bad news and really, really good news.
We are all sinful. We cannot claim to be otherwise.
But for the saved person – repentance brings forgiveness. Perfect, holy, just forgiveness.
So what are we supposed to do?
1. Don’t claim to be sinless. Don’t think we’re good enough on our own.
2. Fall down at the foot of the cross and confess our sins.
3. Ask for forgiveness.
Like I tell my kids – what would we do, where would be if it weren’t for the good news part of this passage?
We would be lost. But because of God’s faithfulness, we are righteous.
