1 Peter 1:3-5 (Listen to song Demo above)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
“According to his great mercy”: I am thankful that this is the reason that God has caused us to be born again. I am thankful that it is not according to any merit of my own. If it were left to that, I certainly would not be on the list, nor would you. Instead, it is according to God’s great mercy. As Paul wrote in Ephesians 2, we were all children of wrath, “but God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,” made us alive with Christ.
Then Peter goes on to tell us of all the work that we have to do to keep this inheritance that God has given us, right? No. Our inheritance is “imperishable, undefiled and unfading, kept in heaven for” those of us who “by God’s power are being guarded through faith through a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” Of course there is work for us in sanctification, but what a comfort this verse is. God is the main actor in our dramas. God is the initiator of our salvation. God is the one who saved us through Christ because of his great mercy. God is the one who is holding us until our resurrection.
Practical suggestions:
– Do you doubt your faith because of your constant struggle with sin? Do you struggle with self righteousness, thinking that God chose you because of who you are? This doxology is for both.
– Give God praise for who he is in your salvation story.
How will you use this fighter verse song in your life this week? with your spouse? your children? your family? your neighbors?
