A soft answer? But I don’t feel like responding with a soft answer. The other person just said something really nasty about me, or threatened me, or insulted me. They don’t deserve a soft answer. They deserve a mean-spirited, harsh answer. I’m sure that if I respond with a harsh word, they’ll back down and see the wisdom of the way I’ve been doing things.

Wait now, that’s not how God responded to my sin. He responded with grace and mercy and love.

I didn’t deserve a soft answer, but God gave me one anyway: Seek first the Kingdom of God.

So if I want to be godly, I should respond to my fellow sinner in the same way as God did.
