Psalm1:5-6 (Listen to song Demo above)
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
The life and death of Osama bin Laden is a sobering reminder of the seriousness of sin and evil. Since the wicked are like chaff, they will not stand with those who are righteous. All those who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved and counted among the righteous because of Jesus. Those who scoff at God and pursue evil will perish, but the Lord knows the righteous and will prosper them.
Osama bin Laden has perished. Call upon the name of Jesus and you will be saved from perishing!
Practical suggestions:
– Meditate upon this verse. Reflect upon your heart. Are you resting in the fact that God knows the righteous and that the wicked will perish?
– Pray to God and confess your sin knowing that your sins are paid for by Jesus.
– Consider that the Lord knows those who love Him.

Psalm1:3-4 (Listen to song Demo above)
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
The one who delights in the law of the Lord is constant and in everything prospers. This is in stark contrast to the wicked. Those who delight in the Lord are rooted, and bearing fruit, prospering, while the sinner and scoffer are blown by every wind and driven away.
Be like the tree planted by streams of living water!
Practical suggestions:
– Meditate upon this verse. Reflect upon your feelings through the day. Are you planted in the good soil of God’s word and delighting in it?
– Pray to God and give thanks for His word that He gives to delight in.
– Consider how the wicked are blown by every wind and blow away.

We just found out that the interview on FamilyLife Today will air May 9 and 10. It’s called “Planting Scripture Seeds.” Stay tuned for more details…

The one who delights in the law of the Lord stands in contrast to the many who are sinners and scoffers. God desires that we enjoy meditating upon His law as we get our coffee, drive to work, eat dinner, talk to friends and everything else we do all day. We enjoy it because it comes from Him, the one who is most delightful in the universe.
May the law of the LORD be your delight day and night!
Practical suggestions:
– Meditate upon this verse. Reflect upon how to meditate on the law day and night. What would you need to change to do this?
– Pray to God to help you to find delight in His law and in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus.
– Consider that the way of the Christian stands in opposition to many who do not truly believe in Jesus Christ.

Recently Bethlehem had a guest speaker (Joe Rigney) in the pulpit preaching on the topic of Discipleship.
Here is one of the passages, which you can listen to here, if you go to time marker 21:35.*
The question is this: Will you be a model worth emulating? . . .
Do you know how to sin rightly? In other words, do you know how to fail miserably, repent thoroughly, seek forgiveness sincerely, make restitution quickly and move on properly, Do you know how to from messing up big time to repenting and then moving on. Can you show someone else how to do that? . . . That’s one of the things you need to model and you know what, that’s one of the things Jesus can’t model. Because he’s never sinned! So how will they learn how to repent? They learn from watching you.
This got me thinking – are there other human character issues that Jesus did not and cannot model for us? Here is the (obviously incomplete) list I came up with, which includes items mentioned in other points of the sermon.
===================================================
Situations and Behaviors that Jesus Can’t Model For Us:
Receiving Correction and Rebuke when you’ve done wrong.
Responding to your own personal failure correctly.
Living with an incomplete understanding of God the Father’s will for us.
Handling Personal Sickness
Being a receptive Mentoree to a human mentor
Accepting and being aware of Mercy given from God
Continuing to obey/worship/praise God when you don’t feel like it.
Choosing Christ as our Lord and Savior
===================================================
I don’t know about you, but this list inspires me.
The Fighter Verse for this week is James 1:4-5
And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
“If any of you lacks wisdom . . . ” Since Jesus never lacked wisdom, this is yet another situation that Jesus can’t model for your friend or child or spouse or coworker. But you can.
How will you do that this week?
Can you think of any items that could be added to this list?
* If you start the video 40 seconds earlier, you can hear a pretty funny 10 second imitation of John Piper
And check out the newest song. It’s a capella!

The full effect trials is that we may be perfect and complete. That is, we are conformed to the image of Christ. Through trials that are strong enough to perfect, it is difficult counting it all joy! How do we get there through trials? Prayer. If anyone lacks wisdom, ask God through prayer and He will give generously.
May God grant you steadfastness for every trial!
Practical suggestions:
– Meditate upon this verse. Reflect upon your past trials. What did it produce in you?
– Pray to God in the midst of trials and ask for wisdom.
– Consider Christ and His perfect righteousness. Even as you strive to be conformed to Christ, and the cruciform love He shows, give thanks that He is your perfection.

What a counter-cultural message this verse is for us! In much the same way that Christ endured the cross for the joy set before him(Hebrews 12:2), the Christian has joy through trials in life. This is because we know what is on the other side of the trail. God is faithful in working all things for our good. (Romans 8:28) In addition, the trial proves our faith to be genuine and results in enduring faith and growing confidence in God’s faithfulness.
May the testing of your faith give you enduring joy!
Practical suggestions:
– Meditate upon this verse. Reflect upon how God has been faithful to you through trials. If you do not feel His faithfulness welling up in joy, pray for the faith to feel it and to be released from bitterness towards God and others.
– Pray that your faith is strengthened in the trials you are enduring.
– Consider how to pray for those whose faith is faltering in trials and suffering.

This is a beautiful picture of God’s sovereignty working in us and our choice to work out our salvation. Decide that you will work for God’s pleasure and your joy will come as a result. This is what it means to obey God.
The fear of the Lord is for your joy!
Practical suggestions:
– Meditate upon this verse. Reflect upon what it is to will and to work for God’s pleasure.
– Pray that you know joy from God’s good pleasure in you. (See Psalm 16:11)
– Consider how to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. (See Psalm 2:11)
