Application of the Fighter Verse for March 26/27

Philippians 2:10-11 – …so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Father exalted Jesus so that everyone would bow before Him for His glory.  Those who believe in Him and those who do not.

Jesus Christ is Lord!

Practical suggestions:

– Meditate upon this verse.  Reflect upon Christ as the first born of all creation.

– Pray that your heart is humbled and confesses that Jesus is Lord.

– Consider what it will be like that all those in heaven, all those on earth and all those under the earth, bow before Jesus and confess Him as Lord.

Thank you Family Life for your Legacy

Last week, I had the honor and privilege of touring Family Life.    They have a remarkable ministry with very practical resources to help live out life on earth as a Christian.

I was impressed by how, everywhere I turned, scripture was posted very visibly along with the story of someone who lived it out.  It was very humbling for me and a reminder of how I must give glory to God in all things.  Too often, I boast in my own accomplishments rather than the Lord.

I am thankful to have met many people through whom the Lord has and is accomplishing His purposes.

In the entry rotunda, there is a picture of Bill Bright, the founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, along with Psalm 127:1. (“Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” NIV) Bill Bright left a legacy that points us to seek God and His kingdom first.

Thank you Family Life for pointing to a legacy of living for the Lord.

In honor of God’s work through Family Life, I have posted Psalm 127:1 (Unless the Lord Builds the House) by Phil Carlson, from the Fighter Verse Songs Set D.

Application of the Fighter Verse for March 19/20

Philippians 2:8-9 – And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

Jesus humbled himself becoming obedient to the point of death.  And we should have that mind? Wow!

May God grant us humility.

Practical suggestions:

– Meditate upon this verse.  Reflect upon Christ’s obedience.

– Pray that you may be humble by God’s grace.

– Consider what it looks like to be humble to the point of death.

Application of the Fighter Verse for March 12/13

1Philippians 2:5-7 – Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

Jesus humbled himself before the Father to do His will.  We should seek the mind of Christ.

May God grant us the mind of Christ.

Practical suggestions:

– Meditate upon this verse.  How does your mind awaken each day?

– Pray that your mind be emptied of your desires and that you be filled with desire for God.

– Consider what it means for you today to take the form of a servant.

Application of the Fighter Verse for March 5/6

1 John 2:15-17 – Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

To abide forever in the Lord, before the Lord with increasing joy, is the ultimate prize.  John writes earnestly to warn us that all that is in the world is passing away.  It is a distraction from the love of God.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and strength.  Do not love the world or the things in the world.

Practical suggestions:

– Meditate upon this verse.  Each of us has desires for things in the world that captivate our attention and distract us from the Lord.  What does your heart desire?

– Pray that your heart desires God above all things.  Turn away from fleeting desires and turn to the Lord.

– Consider sharing with another how the Lord is your satisfaction and joy.

Application of the Fighter Verse for February 26/27

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Those who believe in Jesus are not condemned in this life or the next.  Jesus has taken the punishment that is rightly ours.

Our guilt is absorbed, our sins are forgiven, our debt is paid. Our condemnation is gone because of Jesus’ death on the cross.

Let us rejoice and be glad in the God of our salvation! He has set us free from sin and guilt and shame and condemnation!

Practical suggestions:

– Meditate upon this verse and the depth of your sin.  Dwell in the freedom from judgment, and the free gift of God in Christ Jesus.

– Pray that you would feel your freedom from condemnation now.

– Consider sharing with another what it means to be in Christ Jesus.

Application of the Fighter Verse for February 19/20

Psalm 62:5-7 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

There is nothing that we need that God does not give us.  In the midst of all the whirlwind of circumstances around us, God provides everything we need for faith and godliness.  God is a solid rock upon which to stand and therefore those who stand upon Him shall not be shaken.

Are you resting on the rock?

Practical suggestions:

– Meditate upon this verse and the picture of God as a refuge.  Recognize that your soul needs God alone.

– Consider sharing with another how God as been your salvation, glory, rock and refuge today.

– Pray for your soul to long for God alone

When You are Squeezed What Comes Out?

When a friend speaks shortly with you, how does your heart respond?

When someone cuts you off in traffic what comes out of your mouth?

Pastor David Michael makes a great case for why to get more scripture in your heart

Read the full article on soaking in the word.

“My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word!” Psalm 119:28

May our hearts be so full of the word of God, that we overflow.

Application of the Fighter Verse for February 12/13

Set 1 – Psalm 56:3-4 – When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

Trust in the Lord.  I use this verse with my children all the time.  They know it well and it is our favorite middle of the night verse.  In God I trust.  Why should one be afraid if the Lord is with you?

There is pain at the hands of those who are in the world and would do us harm.  Yet, God is greater than those who are in the world and, most notably, the devil.  There is nothing flesh can do to you to harm your eternal joy with God.  Do not fear the one who can harm your body, but rather the one who has authority over your soul. (See Matthew 10:26-33)

Where do you run when you are afraid?

Practical suggestions this week:

– Meditate upon this verse and God’s faithfulness.  Consider that God is over and in control of all the things in your life that may harm you.  God is good.  Put your trust in Him

–  Consider where your heart goes when you are afraid.  Keep this verse at hand and sing through it whenever you feel fear.  The melody was thoughtfully created to help you rest in the lord with this verse.  When you awaken in the middle of the night to a strange sound, when you fear the icy road conditions, call upon the Lord.  My children learn this song easily, “I like that one dad!”  Teach it to yourself to arm yourself.

– Pray that the Lord and praise Him.  Tell the Lord that you trust Him and ask Him to protect you from the evil one.

Application of the Fighter Verse for February 5/6

Set 1 – Romans 12:1-2 – I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.  Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Jesus Christ died upon the cross as the perfect sacrifice.  Because of His sacrifice, we can take up our cross each day dying to self and be conformed to His likeness.   Metamorphosis is the idea here.  It is not just taking bits here and there into our minds to gradually change, but rather a complete transformation.   The thrust of this transformation is to conform to Christ, not the world.  God has given believers a new mind so that one may understand what is good and acceptable and perfect.

How are you conforming to this world?

Practical suggestions this week:

– Meditate upon this verse and Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.  What is good?  Acceptable?  Perfect?  Conform to Christ.

– Offer yourself to the Lord and pray  for renewal of your mind.  Pray through what it means to have new life given by God and gain the mind of Christ. (See an example here)

– As you look at your own life, pray for discernment to know what is the will of God in Christ Jesus.    What is good and acceptable and perfect?
