Application of the Fighter Verse for August 13/14

Romans 1:16 (listen to the song demo above)

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Paul is eager to go to Rome to preach to them the good news of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.  That’s what he says just before this verse. In this verse, he also tells them that he is not ashamed of the gospel. Why? Because it is the POWER of God for salvation to everyone who believes. Paul is eager and not ashamed because of the power that the gospel holds for these people he loves.  It is the power to save them.  Save them from what? Verse 18 says that the wrath of God is “against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.”  The wrath of God is still against all who are not in Christ.  Are we eager to go to those people? Are we ashamed of the gospel? I am sometimes.

The gospel is the power of God for salvation from the wrath of God. If I were more in touch with this reality, I would be more eager and less ashamed. I would not be afraid of men and would be more longing for them to escape the wrath of God. How about you?

Are you eager to share the gospel with the people around you, your family, your friends, your co-workers?

If you were more aware that the wrath of God were against them and that you had the what was the power to set them free, namely the gospel, would you be more eager?

  • Think about the people you interact most with who are not treasuring Christ.
  • Acknowledge that God’s wrath is against them and that without their turning to him, they will spend eternity in Hell.
  • Ask God to give you an eagerness and to guard you from being ashamed of the gospel. Ask him for opportunities to share this good news with these people.

Application of the Fighter Verse for August 6/7

Matthew 10:28 5  (Listen to song Demo above)

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

For those who trust in Jesus, this verse is very reassuring.  The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. By his blood, those who believe in him are bought and will live with him forever.

For those who do not trust in Jesus, this verse should be terrifying.   Fear God who is able to destroy your soul.  Turn from your sin and believe in Jesus and gain life now and eternally.

Do you fear God or people?

Practical suggestions:

– Meditate upon this verse and understand it is God who is sovereign over your eternal soul.

– Pray to God and ask him to help you to fear him and be in awe of him of his power and his perfect goodness.

– Consider.  How much of your day do you spend in fear of others or your circumstances?

Application of the Fighter Verse for July 30/31

Philippians 1:6

I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

After four weeks of verses about battle, fiery darts, wrestling, darkness and fighting against the dangerous weapons of the evil one (Ephesians 6:10-17) – after all that – we have this verse, which tells that the end of the story is that we, through Christ, will be triumphant over Satan. And this is good news that can aid us today as we see where we are headed.

Paul is sure of it – Are you?

Practical Suggestions:

– Pray for belief in this truth.

– Look at your walk with Christ to see ways in which you are more ‘complete’ than when you first became a Christian.

– Consider what you will look like on that day when the good work is complete in you. How is different from what you look like now?

Application of the Fighter Verse for July 23/24

Ephesians 6:16-18(Listen to song Demo above)

In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, [praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.]

One thing that I have learned in focusing on these verses in Ephesians 6 over the past few weeks is that our wrestling against temptation really is a battle.  We are expected to battle, to fight. Here again, Paul encourages us to use the faith that God has given us and to protect ourselves with God’s salvation. In studying this I read that the sword of the spirit is the only offensive weapon in the list. I love that. God has given us many weapons to protect ourselves, but to go on the offensive against Satan and his powers, there is only one: the sword of the spirit which is the word of God.  That is why we hide God’s word in our heart, that we might be able to stand firm and battle the evil one.

Go on the offensive this week with the word of God that you have hidden in your heart.

Practical suggestions:

– Have you taken the battle that you are in seriously?

– Are you, in Christ’s strength and through his grace, fighting this battle?

– Are you employing the sword of the spirit to advance against Satan in this battle?

Application of the Fighter Verse for July 16/17

Ephesians 6:14-15(Listen to song Demo above)

Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

Paul now begins to tell us about the armor to which he has only previously alluded: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness and the shoes of the readiness of the gospel of peace.  To defend ourselves against the powers from the previous verse, God has supplied us with his truth, his righteousness and his peace.  The devil is the accuser of the saints.  When he comes against us with lies, as he did first with Adam and Eve in the garden, we counter with God’s truth.  When he comes against us with accusations of our sin, and there are many, we counter with Christ’s righteousness that he has imputed to us.  When Satan comes against us with the everyday stress of this world, with anxiety and all other mental barbs, we counter with the peace of the gospel and who we are in Christ.

God has supplied, in Christ, all that we need to defend ourselves against Satan and his spiritual forces. Through grace, we must put on these means of defense.  Pray with me that we might do this and thus stand firm.

God has supplied all that we need to defend ourselves against Satan and his spiritual forces

Practical suggestions:

– What battles are you facing this week?

– Is Satan lying to, accusing, or tormenting you?

– How are you standing firm against these attacks?

How To Teach Young Kids A New Song

I’ve taught my kids more than 150 fighter verse songs. I’ve also been teaching songs to the kids in our Wednesday night Kindergarten/First Grade class for six years. This is how I do it. There isn’t much original about the process outlined here, but it always works.

Warning: There will be times when you think they’re never going to learn the song.

Qualifications to teach a song: You must be able to sing that song. (That’s it.)

This process takes time, but really only six sessions.

Session 1

Sing the song for them. If it’s short, do it twice.

That’s all you have to do the first session.

Session 2

Sing the song for them a couple times and have them sing it through in this way: You sing a phrase and they repeat it – making your way through the song.

My personal theory is that the best way for a song to get into your brain is to hear your own mouth sing it.

Session 3

Sing the song again, singing each phrase and having them repeat it. If it’s a short song, try having them sing it all the way through.

Repetition is key.

Session 4

Sing the song together all the way through.

It is this time that you will think, “They are never going to learn this.”

I think this every single time.

Session 5

Sing the song with them all the way through. This time they will surprise you and almost be able to sing it on their own.

In the middle of the song, suggest that they “Sing louder!”  They like this. Remind them that singing isn’t yelling.

Session 6

This time they will be able to fully sing it on their own.

Praise them for this.

===

Other tips-

I am assuming that we’re talking about kids too young to read music. Obviously, if they can read music and you have the notation available, give it to them. For kids old enough to read, just giving them the words will help.

If this happens to be a Fighter Verse song, you could just play the CD for them for steps 1 and 2.

This would also work for teaching adults how to sing a song.

Thanks to my wife for modeling this for me.

Application of the Fighter Verse for July 9/10

Ephesians 6:12-13 (Listen to song Demo above)

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

Sometimes in my daily battle with sin, I can be discouraged.  I listen to that lies of the evil one that tell me that it does not matter which choices I make.  I wrote last week that the battle we face as Christians is not one that we can fight on our own.  In these verses Paul tells us exactly why that is true. The forces that are at work against us are not simply those of flesh and blood, but are “cosmic”, “spiritual”, “heavenly”.  This is a big deal.  It makes each of our daily wrestlings take on a much wider importance.  Our temptations, sin, victories, have a larger, global even cosmic reality.  Therefore, take up the whole armor of God.  That should be our response.  We must look to the means of grace that Paul will outline for us later in chapter 6.  Only then can we stand firm.

May God give you grace and strength today to do all and to stand firm!

Practical suggestions:

– Are you gripped today by the global, cosmic and generational importance of the minute by minute battle that you face today?

– Are you aware of who you are battling against?

– Are you employing God’s armor for your defense and battle?

Application of the Fighter Verse for July 2/3

Ephesians 6:10-11  (Listen to song Demo above)

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

My boys play a game they call “battle”.  It involves Nerf swords, axes and a lot of drama. They love it.  No one ever gets hurt, no limbs are lost, and most of the time the “battle” ends in smiles.

At the end of Paul’s letter to the Ephesian church he gives them some pastoral advice. He speaks to our battle against Satan the evil one.  This is a battle that cannot be won on our own.  We need outside help.  We need the armor that God has provided for us.  The devil is a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.  This battle is not waged with Nerf swords.  It is waged against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.  If we do not employ the means of grace that Paul will talk about in the following verses, we will succumb to the power of the devil and will not bear the fruit of good works that God wishes for us.

Put on the whole armor of God!

Practical suggestions:

– What battle are you fighting today?

– Are you trying to fight it on your own, or are you putting on the armor of God and employing his means of grace?
